Elliot Heads beach protection - sand filled tubes and containers
Immediately south of the Elliott River, properties have been experiencing substantial erosion since breaching of the spit linking the mainland to Dr May's Island.
ICM developed an erosion management strategy for a private resident that had lost over 7ha of land to erosion. The strategy included the construction of a wall at the mean high water mark to prevent further erosion and a 120m long training wall/groyne along the northern boundary of the property to prevent further migration of the river and realign and widen the beaches to the south.
Undertaken in 2006-07, the works were constructed from close to 1000 sand-filled geotextile containers, each weighing 4.5t.
ICM were responsible for the design and approval of the works as well as the construction supervision, contract management and monitoring.
