Options assessment for low-impact, remote-site erosion management across two Queensland island reserves.
Project Details
Client: Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service
Date: 2021
Location: Low Island & Russell Island, Queensland, Australia

About This Project
The Challenge
Low Island and Russell Island had been experiencing ongoing erosion threatening the loss of infrastructure and established vegetation. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service commissioned ICM to investigate the observed erosion and evaluate options to effectively manage it.
The Solution
The Options Assessment considered ‘soft’ engineering solutions utilising local materials to reduce costs, including beach scraping and nourishment and sand-filled geotextile containers.
The assessment included:
Review of site environmental conditions and erosion trends
Consideration construction constraints due to remoteness of sites and limitation of available materials and resources
Environmental values and design constraints
