About This Project

 

The Challenge

The site, immediately south of the Elliott River entrance in Hervey Bay, was originally linked to Dr Mays Island. Breaching of the sand spit in the 1950s caused considerable erosion at Mays Point - 3 to 10 metres a year - and a long-term realignment of the coast to the south.

 

The Solution

ICM developed an erosion management strategy centred on a 130m long training wall/groyne to reduce infilling of the estuary, act as a control point, realign and widen the beaches south of the Elliott River entrance, and improve navigation within the river entrance.

 

The works were constructed using close to 1,000 sand-filled geotextile containers. The design incorporated a lower crest to minimise visual and coastal-process impacts, and a flexible toe to let the structure accommodate the dynamics of the adjacent Elliott River.

 

The works have proven very successful, widening the beach by up to 50m and stabilising the previously eroding dunes.
