About This Project

The Challenge

The Khor Ajman Rehabilitation Project focused on the restoration and ecological enhancement of a sensitive tidal waterway and its associated mangrove habitat in Ajman. The Khor forms part of a broader manmade waterway network and supports extensive mangrove ecosystems that play a critical role in habitat provision, water filtration and coastal biodiversity.

The Solution

ICM was commissioned to carry out a comprehensive assessment to understand the drivers of mangrove and water quality degradation, and to develop a staged roadmap of short- and long-term rehabilitation measures. A combined nature-based and engineered solution was identified as the most effective long-term approach, delivering a range of environmental and community benefits, including improved mangrove health and fish habitats, enhanced water quality and circulation, wetland features with potential for education and recreation, and alignment with RAMSAR conservation goals.
