About This Project
The Challenge
Sunshine Coast Regional Council wanted an alternative to intermittent dredging operations at Noosa Main Beach - a continuous system to backpass sand from the Noosa River entrance to the main beach and keep it moving through the longshore transport system.
The Solution
ICM has been involved in sand bypass systems at the Gold Coast, Lakes Entrance and Durban. Building on this experience, ICM was commissioned in 2006 to assist Sunshine Coast Regional Council with trials of a sand backpass system for Noosa Main Beach.
The system backpasses sand from the Noosa River entrance back towards the main beach and into the longshore transport system in a cyclical fashion, enhancing beach stability and improving coastal resilience through a 'soft', nature-based approach.
